Gnomeo and Juliet may have moved to a new location, but the light-hearted fun remains the same. Now the whole family can get in on the adventure as Sherlock Gnomes arrives on a Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Combo Pack today courtesy of Paramount Home Media Distribution.
A sequel to the 2011 film Gnomeo & Juliet, Sherlock Gnomes finds the star-crossed lovebirds trying to adapt to life in London and the new responsibilities that come with it. When Gnomeo (James McAvoy) and Juliet (Emily Blunt) discover that their family and friends have gone missing they join forces with legendary detective Sherlock Gnomes (Johnny Depp) and his trusty assistant Watson (Chiwetel Ejiofor) to find out who is responsible. Believing that his arch-nemesis Moriarty (Jamie Demetriou), an evil ornament hating pie mascot, is to blame, the group races to piece together the clues before it is too late.
While Sherlock Gnomes may not have set the box office ablaze, though it did turn a modest profit bringing in $84 million worldwide on a $59 million budget, the film will find a decent following on Blu-ray. Young children will enjoy the slapstick humour and the don’t take your friends for granted messaging. Although adults will figure out the mystery quite easily, there are plenty of references to classic Sherlock Holmes stories to satisfy Holmes fans. In fact, one of the best aspects of the film is the way the film visualizes the inner workings of Sherlock’s mind as he figures out clues.
Forgoing the musical romance of the original, John Stevenson’s sequel is more in line with the action adventure beats of his Oscar nominated film Kung Fu Panda. While not on par of with that film, Sherlock Gnomes does offer enough excitement to captivate children for a few hours.
The Blu-ray Combo Pack is full of bonus features that add some additional insight into the film while providing some fun for the kids as well. There is a “How to Draw” feature in which an artist provides a detailed guide on how to draw the central characters in the film. The “All Roads Lead to Gnome: London Locations in Sherlock Gnomes” segment highlights how the film captured many of the iconic landmarks in London; and fans get to listen to the cast, including Emily Blunt, James McAvoy and Johnny Depp, talk about their roles in the “Gnome is Where the Heart is” featurette.
