Fast & Furious diehards have plenty to rejoice about these days. The first spinoff in the series, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, was a box office hit and the ninth film in the franchise is set to be released next year. While fans eagerly await the next instalment, they can pass the time by revisiting all the glorious insanity of Hobbs & Shaw on the Blu-ray.

Keeping close to the franchise’s winning formula, the film finds Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Shaw (Jason Statham) reluctantly teaming up to locate Shaw’s sister Hattie (Vanessa Kirby, the true scene-stealer of the film). A skilled MI6 agent, Hattie is on the run after injecting herself with a deadly virus to keep it out of the hands of former special forces agent Brixton (Idris Elba). Working for a mysterious tech company known as Eteon, Brixton has been transformed into a high-tech killing machine.

As Hobbs and Shaw embark on this globetrotting adventure, they must learn to work together and learn that nothing can be achieved without family.

One should know what to expect by now from a Fast & Furious film and Hobbs & Shaw delivers on all accounts. It is the perfect action film to watch on a lazy Saturday afternoon. The plot is not deep, but there is plenty of over-the-top action and silly banter to keep the story moving. While the last act is a tad plodding, the additions of Ryan Reynolds and Kevin Hart to the roster make up for the film’s shortcomings.

The Blu-ray, which arrives today courtesy of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, comes packed with over 80 minutes of bonus material. The most interesting of which are the ones that focuses on the action set pieces. In “Stunt Show and Tell” director David Leitch provides an instructional guide that outlines just how many people and teams are needed to make a great action sequence. There is also the “Practical Action” featurette that highlights how each character’s fighting style was choreographed to mimic their personalities and familial relationships. WWE fans will also find “Keeping It in the Family: A Conversation with Roman and Dwayne” insightful as Roman Reigns and Dwayne Johnson discuss their personal relationship and how wrestling has led them down the acting path.

Regardless of whether you are a fan of the franchise, or diving in for the first time, Hobbs & Shaw will satisfy those looking for pure entertainment.
