In the Realm of the Senses 2

One of the benefits of having a movie like 50 Shades of Grey dominate the box office is that it gets people talking about a subject that has been on my mind a lot recently: Sex. Thankfully the proprietors of An Online Universe, Australian film critics Sam McCosh and Andrew Buckle, two of the nicest people I had the pleasure of spending time with at TIFF last year, offered me the opportunity to get some sexual hang ups off my chest while they are off enjoying their honeymoon. As part of their site’s The Forgotten series, I wrote about my recent experience with Nagisa Ôshima’s In the Realm of the Senses, a film so graphic in its sexual content that it would make 50 Shades of Grey blush profusely.

  1. I knew about the sexual content going into this when I watched it for the 1,001 Movie list. Consequently, I was curious about how explicit it would turn out to be.

  2. Interesting. Talking about the senses I have started the Five Senses blogathon this week, so I hope you find time to join in 😉

  3. That is a film I’m dying to see just because of the sex as well as how Oshima was willing to put explicit sex into a story that is quite broad. I hope to get that film in any of the upcoming Criterion DVD sales this year. Besides, I knew it is still quite controversial as Fifty Shades of Grey is considered child’s play in comparison to the film that came before it.

    1. While it is a film I think is worth seeing, I am not sure if it is one that I would consider owning per say. It is not the type of film I would revisit frequently enough, though others may disagree with that statement.
