Soderbergh - Traffic

Nominated for a whopping 12 Academy Awards, Ridley Scott’s Gladiator was a force to be reckoned with at the 2000 Oscars. Was the action film truly the top film of the year? Or did director Steven Soderbergh merely knock himself out of the equation by having two films (Traffic and Erin Brockovich) in the running for the Best Picture award? On this week’s episode of The Dew Over podcast, I join host Jamie Dew and a great panel of guests, including film critics Norm Wilner and Phil Brown, to discuss the 2000 Oscars. During our conversation we also touch on the martial arts majesty of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and try to make sense of the world that the characters of Chocolat exist in.

So take a moment to give the episode a listen and see whether or not you agree with the panel’s final verdict.

  1. I’m really interested to hear this. I am a huge “Gladiator”apologist. I genuinely think it is a phenomenal movie. It definitely has a blockbuster flavor but for me that is a good thing. I respect the film’s detractors, I just don’t see it the same way.
