It has been an eventful week if you are a film lover. First the Golden Globes were handed out, then we had the Oscar nomination, and finally the 2014 edition of the Sundance Film Festival ushered in a new year of must-see films. One of the 66 shorts screening at Sundance this year is Gregory Go Boom, a dark comedy featuring a wheelchair-bounded Michael Cera looking for a little fun at The Salton Sea. The film follows Gregory (Cera) both on his quest to spend time with his older brother (Brett Gelman), and his attempt to lose his virginity over the course of a series of horrible dates. Director Janicza Bravo crafts a comedy that is funny, disturbing, and extremely dark. The film feels like the dark quirky cousin of Napoleon Dynamite, however, Bravo manages to avoid many of the trappings that made Dynamite redundant. Constantly walking the line between humorous and offensive, Gregory Go Boom will no doubt divide audiences.
